Teaser Trailer Analysis-Knocked Up

This trailer sticks to common conventions of teaser trailers.
The introduction of the main charactersand the problem
that are faced with is included in the trailer, but it does
not give away the solution or ending so the audience
are enticed to watch the movie to see what occurs.
It lets the viewersknow there is a unplanned
pregnancy but not what the pair do about it.

The sub-text of the trailer and movie is the
controversial topic of one night stands
and unplannedpregnancies. By
portraying the subject of one night
stands and how they can have a negative
outcome and perhaps change people's
lives for the better or worse, the trailer
shows us that themovie is subversively
mocking the outrage than come with
this subject.

The non-diegetic sound of the music
is used very cleverly within this teaser
trailer on two levels.
The classy aspect of the piano
enhances the setting of the trailer of a
flash restaurant and highlights the large
contrasts between the setting and the
subject of the movie. The other aspect
of the music that is used to enhance
the effectiveness of the trailer is the
lyrics of the song used.
The lyrics are describing the art of
love and love making and how it is
perfectly natural and common within all
species. This supplies the trailer with
some humour due to the movie
magnifying the obvious flaws in sex and
how it can provide negative as well as
positive endings.

The costume of the male character is
very important in portraying the
casualness of the evening and how he
does not expect to be faced with the
news of the pregnancy. By wearing an
informal top ,he also gives the audience
an idea of the sub-text of how unplanned
pregnancies can just occur without
thought. The setting of a fancy restaurant
is another important part of the
mise-en-scene within this teaser trailer.
The aspects of the setting provide an
interesting juxtaposition on the subject
of the movie, in the contrast between
unprotected one of sex and a formal
and flash restaurant.

Although the trailer does introduce
the main characters of the movie and
the problem that is encountered, in
does not give away how the problem
is over come and the ending of the film.
Despite explaining that the movie will
include a man and a woman having
unprotected sex and becoming
pregnant, this teaser trailer does not
show viewers how the one night
stand occurs and what they do about
it.

The creators of the movie have
enticed viewers by using a famous
comedy actor that the majority of their
target audience will have a knowledge
of. The 'star persona' of Seth Rogen
and the type of comedy he has been
involved with over the last ten years is
likely to effect the decision of the target
audience on viewing the product.

The text images used in this teaser
trailer and the graphics within them are
important parts of the process in
attracting viewers. The graphics used
on the movie logo and at the end of
the trailer in which sperm cells swim
towards the 'O's within the words to
portray conception show viewers that
the subject of unplanned pregnancy is
being mocked within the movie and is
used as the mainsource of comedy.
Another way that the creators entice
viewers into the product is the
mentioning of a previous movie that
they have made. By telling the
audience that this film has been
created by the makers of the extremely
popular 'The 40 Year Old Virgin', the
trailer is immediately grabbing
their attention as they are likely to be
interested in this movie if they enjoyed
the previous film.
