Textual Analysis - Mojo

Front Cover

Masthead

The name of the magazine has a white outline. Since The colour of the text is also the background colour, an outline would be needed in order to see the text.

Headline

The position of the headline is just below the middle of the page, a prime position so it is one of the first things that the reader sees.
The lettering of the headline is bold and white so it is easy to see over the mainly black and grey background. The lettering is also big enough to be very noticeable but not so big that it takes up too much room

Colors

The colors on the front cover are mainly black, white and grey but the text: "1000" is cut out so the colourful design on the next page is shown, creating a big contast in colour which catches the reader's eye.

Artists

Only drawings of The Beatles are shown

Font

Is black and white to add to the retro feel of the front cover

Contents

Images
There is only one image on the contents page, it is positioned near the bottom of the page. Although the image is quite small, it illustrates the term: "Beatle mania" which is associated with this magazine.

Page references
The page references are set in page number order, however the articles are put into categories. These categories are the years: 1962, 1963 and 1964.
There is also a "features" section which shows a list of separate articles about The Beatles and their albums during this time period

Columns
The contents page is split into two vertical columns, the main articles are listed on the right hand side column while the the "features" are listed on the left hand side column.

Language
The language is simple so it is easy to find specific articles

Text
The text on the right hand side of the page is smaller than the text on the left hand side, this is because there is simply more text on the right hand side. The font in both columns is very basic. In terms of color the page numbers on the left hand side are gold, while it is the names of the years which are colored gold on the right hand column The names of the articles are in bold while the names of the people who wrote them are not. This is so you see the name of article first.

Other information
There is also a list of contributors to the magazine. Since it is quite a long list and the list of contributors is not as important as the list of articles, the font size is very small.

Double page spread

Colors
The colors on the double page spread is mostly black and white which reflects the time period of the 60's but the colors of the American flag (red, white and blue) are used as a contrast

Sub headings
The sub heading is above the headline instead of below. It is colored white so it is easy to see over the the grey background.

Text
The very small text is colored black against a grey background to add to the retro feel.

Columns
There is a small section of text on the the mid left had side of the spread, so you see the dominating image first and the text second. There is only half a column of text.

Images
The whole of the double page spread is on large black and white image. The main headline is colored in red, white and blue and is in bold 3d italics.

Image/ text combination
Main headline is behind the image itself to show that the main image is the focal point and the small article is written around the people in the image itself.

Language
The language is very formal so it can appeal to a wide audience (young and old)
