Textual Analysis - Calcio Italia


















Front Cover


Masthead

Name: Calcio Italia
Colour: White so it can be seen over a dark background. Also green, both white and green are colours within the Italian flag.
Other Things: Issue of the magazine, price, catch-phrase to entice readers. Again coloured white so it can be easily seen over the dark background.

Headline

Quite large, coloured red, catches the reader's attention with bright colours. Positioned just under the name of the magazine so it's one of the first things the reader sees. The words used shows that the player involved is close to retirement and that he has one things left to do in his career, 'My Final Dream'.

Strapline

Use of team name and name of players, the creators assume that readers will have a knowledge and interest in the subject and that this will entice them to the magazine. Use of white again to stand out from background and depict the Italian flag, also blue which is the colour of Italian football and of the team involved.

Hooks

Free posters are advertised to persuade readers to buy the product. Use of famous and popular players to appeal to the audience.

Mentioning of other stories involved in the magazine to entice readers to buy the product and read on.

Use of bright colours to attract reader attention.

Layout

Articles of less importance are lower down the page with the more important imformation at the top.

The magazine is of normal A4 size.

Other

Barcode is positioned is the bottom right-hand corner to get it out of the way as it is not important.

Date and price are positioned under the magazine name to show their importance.

Use of Celebrities/Players

The main images of the page are of famous footballers playing football. The creators use these players to entice the audience into the magazine because they are famous and popular. Also the positions that the shots have taken place are almost action shots to imply the action of the magazine and to catch the audience's eye.

On the 'Plus' section, there is a list of footballers involved inside the magazine, like the images, these are used to appeal to people who know these players.

Colours

Either white or bright colours such as red, yellow and green to stand out from the dark background and catch the audience's eye. Also the use of white, red and green to depict the Italian flag and blue to depict the colour of Italian football.

Fonts

Colours-red, white, green, yellow and blue.
Size-Large, capitals, bold.

Images

Positioned just below the top left hand corner of the page and on the middle-right of the page. The images are used to show the audience what is to come inside the magazine and attract the audience to the stories.

Page References

Headings are used to categorise the articles. The page references are in red to stand out from the background and so they are easy to remember. The titles of the articles are also included to entice the readers tor read them.

Language

The language used in simple, this allows quick and easy reading and understanding so readers can move to the page they want quickly.

Font

Size-Headings and story titles are in larger font to attract the reader's eye. Other text is smaller to fit the information on the page.
Colour-The main text is coloured black to allow easy reading over the white background.

Extra Information

Page number on the bottom right hand corner of the page.
There is also the magazine website next to the page number.


























Double-Page Spread

Headline

Large and bold font. White with a red outline so it can be seen over the white background. Placed in the top left hand corner of the page. Colours of red and white are sued to depict the colours of the teams involved.

Sub-Heading

Large and bold font. Red with a white outline to contrast the colours of the main headline. Placed virtically down the right hand side of the page.

Text

Size-The size of the text is larger on the headline and sub-heading to attract the reader's attention and smaller on the main text to fit the information on the page.
Type of font- Basic font so it is easy for readers to read it.
Colour-Black, easy to read over the black background.
The text that acts as captions for the images are in italics and bold to contrast the main text of the article.

Columns

There are three columns, although they all have the same width, the length varies to fit in the other things on the page.

Extra Information

Across the bottom of the spread there is a small added article relating to the main article. This involves a small image and text for each section describing the subject.

The page number is in the bottom right hand corner of the spread.

Images

The size of the images from the main article are large photographs of players and coaches, which are described in the text. The gestures of the players and coaches in the images show poor body language to depict the failing theme of the article.

The size of the images from the extra article are very small photographs of players and coaches, which are described in the text. Like the main images the body language in them is used to depict failure and also success.

The images from the main article are positioned on the far left and right hand sides of the spread next to the section that are depicting.

The images from the extra article are positioned near the bottom of the spread as they are not as important as the images from the main article. Like the main images they are also next to the section they are depicting.

Language

The language is quite formal in the main article, but is less formal in the extra article, this is because it is designed to be short, less important and used as extra information. Both articles use lexical terminology to appeal to their target audience. By using words relating to the subject of football, the creators assume the readers are interested in and understand the topic and entice the audience to read the articles.
